Character Info
◎ Character's Name: Pearl Fey
◎ Character's Canon: Ace Attorney
◎ Character's Age: 17
◎ Canon Point: Post-Dual Destinies, the fifth game in the series.
◎ Background/History: Here!
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Yes to the second, sort of. Pearl is a spirit medium, meaning she can channel the spirits of the dead into her own body. In the earlier games in the series when Pearl was much younger, it is said that Pearl is particularly prodigious at channeling.
◎ Personality:
When we first meet 8-year-old Pearl in the game Justice For All, it's in her home of Kurain Village. And she promptly runs away from Phoenix Wright, because he looks "suspicious". Kurain Village is a secluded place that gets few strangers, and Pearl's mother Morgan Fey was strict with her precious daughter. Pearl was rather shy, only speaking with Phoenix once she realizes he's "Mystic Maya's special someone" (Pearl is a hardcore Phoenix/Maya shipper against all logic sometimes, though this has lessened in her teen years). There were few (if any) children for Pearl to play with growing up, and her mother told her to never speak to strangers (drilling it into her that "if a suspicious-looking person tries to talk to you, run away"), resulting in her being quiet and shy.
Even nearly ten years later, it's said she has a hard time with huge crowds. When we run into her in Dual Destinies, now age 17, she has a psyche-lock (bullshit lawyer power that Phoenix has... hilariously thanks to Pearl) on her due to her embarrassment of getting lost at her age in the aquarium (and then literally running into an animal trainer named Marlon, ending up with her covered in fish which isn't anything to be proud of either). Though this is also for Marlon's sake, as she doesn't want him to get in trouble, and he asked her not to tell anyone about it.
She's a girl eager to help others. When Marlon asks her not to tell anyone where they ran into each other, she keeps it a secret until Phoenix breaks her pysche-lock. She's happy to seek out the missing penguin for the animal trainer. And later, she's eager to help Phoenix with his investigation of the aquarium murder. She even becomes so busy helping by using the forensics kit Phoenix forgets that she's even running around still doing it (gee thanks Mr Nick). And then, she offers to stay and feed the (possibly dangerous) sick orca because she's worried about the sea mammal's health. Pearl has a kind heart and puts others before herself.
Pearl is loyal and protective of those she cares about. In particular we see this in the way she cares about her older cousin Maya Fey, especially with scolding Phoenix when she believes that he's betraying Mystic Maya by flirting with other women. Pearl is a protector, the type of person who would protect those she loves with her dying breath. She is a guardian to the core, a girl who thinks of others first and takes insults to them personally. She in particular idolizes her cousin Mystic Maya, when she was a child claiming she wanted to be just like her.
According to Phoenix, Pearl has become like a big sister to his daughter Trucy (even if she's... shorter than Trucy... somehow). In a way, it's become a cycle. Mia was Maya's big sister, Maya acted as big sister to Pearl (and in a way, a mother figure solely because Pearl's mother was gone), and now Pearl is acting as big sister to Trucy though the two are only a year apart in age. Phoenix also says, ...Is she trying to be MY big sister too, now?! after she says what a nice guy he is. It's almost like Pearl has a mother hen tendency, but it's a little more of a big sister hen. Though she does clean up the Wright Agency office and say she plans to "clean up their attitudes" when the people working there undo all her hard work.
Pearl's personality is heavily affected by her mother's influence, even though the woman has been out of her life since she was eight and she isn't a thing like her. But before then, her mother Morgan Fey ruled every aspect of her life, considering Pearl her most "precious treasure". It was Morgan's goal to have her daughter become the Master of Kurain, to make up for Morgan being slighted by her own sister who became Master instead of her. Morgan was strict with her daughter, not wanting her to speak with strangers from outside the village, keeping her cooped up there. At age 8 she didn't know what a lawyer or train was. Even now Pearl has little knowledge of the outside world, particularly modern technology, referring to using a forensic kit as "forensicking", though she was able to find videos on a TV phone so she's not as out of the loop as she once was.
She is a product of her growing up, both in terms of her strict mother and then later when the more fun-loving Maya took over raising her. Pearl was already a cheerful, loving child, no doubt her older cousin had a profound effect on Pearl-- such as seeing a cart in a robotics lab and suggesting Prosecutor Edgeworth push her and Phoenix around on it, and then a few seconds later pressing a random button without knowing what it does. While Pearl takes things a bit more seriously than Maya did in the earlier games for the most part, she still has that energetic "let's do the fun thing" streak to her.
Pearl is a romantic. In her village, many of the men leave the women due to the power of the women in the Fey clan-- Pearl's own father is said to have left shortly after she was born. This is why Pearl was so invested in Maya and Phoenix's "relationship", basically being an in-canon shipper that goes so far as to slap Phoenix unconscious when he gets flustered in front of another woman. Though she seems to have let go of her ship as she's grown up, at least for the most part. Pearl is the sort of girl in love with love stories, though even at her age her own romantic experience no doubt sits at nil. She's easily moved by tender moments, even going so far as to call Athena bonding with an Orca a "friendship blossoming" and "moving".
Not immediately obvious from looking at the lithe, waifish young girl is her determination and hardiness. At age 8 she made her way from her village to the courthouse by running the whole way-- a trek that would have been two hours by train, and she ran the whole way with nothing but a map to guide her. She is the sort of person who when she wants something done, she will get it done. At the age of nine she was able to slap a grown man unconscious, despite her tiny size. And when her efforts to clean up the Wright Agency office are undone, she rolls up her sleeves and says she'll just have to clean up their attitudes. She takes zero insult from anyone (when Phoenix implies her penguin calendar smells like fish, she switches to her mad sprite and tells him to not be rude), or insult to other people apparently either (Phoenix tells Athena she's scowling too much, and Pearl is mad and tells him not to be rude... again). To put it simply, Pearl Fey is hardcore.
A kind girl with a gentle demeanor, Pearl is sweet-natured with a naive heart. An optimist at the core, she is a positive girl. Even despite tragedies of her past, Pearl is a smiling girl with no trace of bitterness. Pearl is said to be refined, at the age of eight and nine she was particularly mature for her age (besides a trouble with spelling). She's also bad at arts & crafts, according to herself, though anyone that can piece an urn back together at all (even if it was misspelled and with glue cracks all over...) isn't half-bad. Despite her trouble with spelling, she has shown an interest in reading-- as a child she was ecstatic to meet her favorite author, and grown up she notes she "read in a book" that orcas eat penguins.
◎ Powers/Abilities:
As a spirit medium, Pearl has the ability to channel the spirits of the dead. She comes from a family which possesses strong spiritual power, and Pearl is said to be particularly gifted. The women of the family can channel spirits using the Kurain Channeling Technique. When channeling a spirit, the spirit takes over the medium's body-- even changing their appearance, hair and clothes aside. While the spirit is in control, the medium has no control over her own body as her own soul is being suppressed by the channeled spirit. The medium is completely unconscious and unaware during this time, not even able to dream. Channeling the dead isn't the only thing spirit mediums are shown to do-- Pearl is also seen imbuing a magatama (a sacred charm) with spiritual energy, specifically Maya Fey's magatama for Phoenix Wright so he can view "psyche-locks" (in other words, lie detector locks) on people's hearts and break them.

WELCOME TO ViViD. Pearl was not exactly a tech wiz, the most she can do is work a tv phone, the idea of some sort of virtual reality in your head video game was far from her first thought when she saw those words. Her first thought was that she was dreaming, even though she couldn't remember going to sleep. She runs through the dream, feeling oddly awake for such a dream-like (or at times nightmare-like) place. Even when she finishes the level and a disembodied voice tells her it's just the beginning (sending a shiver down her spine), it doesn't feel like something that could be real life. Then she exits the game and finds herself in front of a power-point presentation.
The ViViD level was a dream-like place that felt real, and the presentation is just the opposite-- a real place that made her feel groggy like a dream. She soaked up all the information, but processing the whole thing at much was daunting. Before she even can, the presentation ends and she finds herself in the city. It's different from the cities, she's seen, needless to say, and for a long moment she just stares. As if her brain is trying to catch up with her.
But then she shakes her head, and turns determined. "All right, Pearly." She didn't usually talk to herself, but maybe a little pep would help. "Time to find our friends." Someone had to be here. She would search the whole city if she had to, there had to be someone around here that she knew. The city streets seemed full of people, it was impossible for her own friends not to be somewhere here. And if they weren't... well, she was a big girl and could figure things out for herself. That didn't mean she wanted to, however.
Everything else could be dealt with after she found someone.
She started by walking the streets, asking various people if they knew any spiky haired lawyers, sunny mood-reading lawyers, tiny magicians... so on and so forth. But finally, she turned to the CereVice. Which... was not like a TV phone. Or a regular phone. It looked like it could give the stuff in the Cosmo Space Center's robotics lab a run for it's money, tech-wise. After a few pokes and prods, she figures out how to make a video. And how to make it hover which oh my Mystic Maya it's a flying magic TV phone. Pearl is a bit awed at just how neat everything here is, even if she feels lost in this new place. And, well... it sounds like it may be her home for a while, so may as well make the best of it.
◎ Is your character retaining any previous game memories? Nope!
